Thinking About a Will? Here’s When Most People Should Make One

A lot of people ask the same question at some point: when should I make a will?

Many assume a will is something you deal with later in life, maybe when you retire or when you feel older than you do now.

The truth is most people benefit from having a will much earlier than they expect. A will is simply a way to make sure the people you care about are taken care of and that your wishes are clear.

Without one, the state decides how your property is handled.

What Happens If There Is No Will

When someone passes away without a will, Pennsylvania law determines how assets are distributed. That process doesn’t consider personal preferences or family dynamics. It follows a legal formula.

Sometimes that formula works out fine. Other times it leads to confusion, delays, or disagreements that could have been avoided with a simple document. And compared to the time, stress, and potential legal costs that can come from going without an estate plan, creating a will is often far more affordable than people expect.

Even smaller estates can become complicated when there are unanswered questions about property, finances, or responsibility.

Life Events That Should Trigger a Will

People often think they need a certain amount of money or property before making a will. In reality, it’s usually life events that make a will important.

Buying a home, getting married, having children, or starting a business all introduce new responsibilities. A will allows you to decide who handles your affairs and how your assets are distributed. Parents also use wills to name guardians for minor children. That decision alone gives many families peace of mind.

A Will Can Always Be Updated

One reason people delay writing a will is the belief that it locks decisions in forever. In reality, wills are updated all the time. As families grow and circumstances change, estate plans can change too.

What matters most is getting a clear plan started.
