Know Which Toys Are Safe and Unsafe

December is recognized as Safe Toys and Gifts Month, encouraging families to be mindful of which toys could pose a risk to their health and safety. Read on to learn more about what to keep in mind when doing your holiday shopping this year.

What Should I Look For When Purchasing?

Finding the safest toy or gift for your child can seem like a daunting task, as it can be challenging to know what is truly "unsafe." This is especially true if there are multiple children in your home of different ages. However, there are three key things to be aware of:

Is It Age-Appropriate?

When shopping, consider whether a gift or toy is age and developmentally appropriate for your child. For example, if they are still an infant prone to putting objects in their mouth, it may be wise to avoid smaller gifts or those that could be easily breakable. Additionally, young children or those with special needs may be more inclined to play with sensory toys, so be mindful of this when gifting.

Are There Choking Hazards?

Before purchasing a gift, consider whether it contains pieces that need to be assembled or is small enough to where it could pose a choking hazard to small children. Twist ties, tags, and other common packaging items may also need to be promptly disposed of to avoid potential harm.

Are There Sharp Edges or Can It Be Broken Easily?

Nearly every parent has felt the pain of stepping on a Lego or other similar small toy with rigid or sharp edges. When purchasing a gift, it's crucial to think about what kind of risk it may pose if left around the house, thrown, or even mishandled. Likewise, consider if the toy can be easily disassembled or broken by your children, as this may become a choking hazard.

Pennsylvania Personal Injury Attorneys

Unfortunately, this time of year can result in unexpected accidents that harm your children. While manufacturers have a responsibility to warn of potential hazards and ensure that their products are not defective, it may be hard to tell what is and isn't inherently unsafe.

Know that you have a right to seek compensation for defective products that cause harm to you or your little one. Call to get in touch with a member of the team at Slusser Law Firm to learn your legal options.
