The Do’s and Don’t of Winter Maintenance

Winter weather can cause significant wear and tear on your vehicle if not properly maintained. Before the weather gets too severe this season, understand the do’s and don’ts of winter maintenance so that you can reduce the risk of collisions caused by mechanical issues and inclement weather conditions.

What To Do

While there are several things you can do to maintain the safety of your vehicle - many of which can be further explained by a certified mechanic - here are three things to keep in mind:

Keep your gas tank at half full at all times, even if you are choosing to store your vehicle for the season.

Swap out your tires for all-weather/winter tires or add tire chains. It’s always good to remember this swap when the weather is consistently below 45°F.

Perform preventative maintenance on your vehicle before the weather gets too severe.

What Not To Do

With the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s common for vehicle safety to be put on the back burner. No matter how busy you get, ensure you don’t:

Forget to put on new wipers and keep fluid levels maintained.

Neglect keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle at all times. You can make a simple one with first aid supplies, winter clothing, non-perishable snacks, an air pump, and jumper cables.

Let your tire pressure get too low—this can increase the risk of a tire blowout. Remember, you lose about a pound per square inch with each 10-degree drop in temperature, so ensure your monitoring tire pressure.

Regular maintenance is essential for ensuring that you increase the longevity of your vehicle and keep you and your loved ones safe. This winter, take the precautionary measures necessary to improve roadway safety.
